Scuba Equipment – For Vacation Divers To Serious Technical Applications
There is much to learn about with scuba equipment when you are just getting started in this exciting sport. Once you start learning, you will quickly discover there is even more specialized gear for different kinds of diving. But let’s keep this to the most widely used equipment with recreational diving most people do. It is quite common for many vacationers to rent what they need for a dive. That is fine and it can be safely done, but you really should understand what you are using and getting. Obviously you are putting your life on the line when you are using unknown diving gear. So it is in your best interest to understand as much about scuba equipment as possible.
There are two basic types of equipment configurations involved with scuba diving. What you need will depend on the application, diving conditions and the purpose of your dive.
The most commonly used configuration for recreational divers is the open-circuit set-up. The closed-circuit, or semi-closed circuit, is often called a rebreather configuration. This particular type was the first to exist, it preceded the open-circuit, however it is not used as much as the open-circuit. In the closed-circuit, the diver will breathe back into the equipment, and then the exhaled gas is made fit to breathe again.
Air tanks are commonly associated with all scuba divers, and most people understand the purpose. Typically, these air tanks are made of stainless steel; most of the time they are provided in different sizes to fit the various divers that will use them. Due to the fact that all dives are very different, varied cylinders have been made to compensate. The construction of the cylinders has an effect on the amount available for each diver that uses them. Depending upon whether or not the cylinders are used in the US or Europe, the cylinder designations can be very diverse. Inside each cylinder that is from the United States is one atmosphere of pressure or 1 Atm representing a full tank. The same cylinder in Europe would be measured in terms of the volume of air inside.
Deep diving is usually accomplished by technical divers who enjoy going far down usually further than the average diver will go. Diving in waters that are extremely deep require special skills, acquirements, and an awareness that only veterans typically have. Emergency backup units are commonplace with deep-sea divers who need to be prepared in case of emergencies which includes a special mixture of air needed when diving so deep. It is commonplace to see pony cylinders attached to divers that do this type of diving. Backup units like this are able to function independently having mouthpieces and hoses for emergency purposes. Because they are fully contained, they can provide the air that you need in order to resurface when malfunctions occur.
Once you begin to use complex scuba equipment, this will open the door to other aspects of diving. If you really enjoy going to the greater depths of the ocean, or checking out a forgotten cave, specialized gear should be purchased and used to get you to those locations quickly and easily. Between the military and high-tech industry, specific situations have developed over the years requiring more research and development. If you really enjoy hanging out with people that are constantly learning and sharing their experiences, find people from your local scuba diving class and start talking to them as well.
